Eliphaz was confident. He sounded spiritual. He spoke about God. He stated things that were true.

He was also completely wrong about Job.

In Job 4–5, Eliphaz makes one of the most dangerous mistakes a religious person can make: he takes what he has seen, what he has experienced, and what he thinks he knows, then speaks as though God has confirmed his conclusion.

“I have seen.”

“I heard a voice.”

“We have searched it, so it is.”

There was only one problem. God never told Eliphaz that Job was suffering because of hidden sin.

This message exposes the danger of allowing personal experience, feelings, dreams, visions, traditions, assumptions, and even correctly stated biblical principles to become authorities over what God has actually revealed.

A person can quote truth and apply it wrongly.

A person can have an incredible spiritual experience and interpret it wrongly.

A preacher can sound completely confident and still be wrong.

Experience must be judged by the Book. The Book must never be judged by experience.

This truth becomes even more important when it comes to salvation. Your feelings cannot save you. Your religious experience cannot save you. Water baptism cannot save you. Reformation cannot save you. Your works cannot save you.

Jesus Christ saves.

1 CORINTHIANS 15:3-4

3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;

4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

ROMANS 3:25

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

ACTS 16:31

31 And they said, Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved, and thy house.

Do not trust an experience. Trust Jesus Christ and what God has said.
