THE SUBSTITUTE | Genesis 22:7-13 | 2 Corinthians 5:21

One of the greatest truths in all the Bible is the truth of substitution.

In Genesis 22, Abraham takes Isaac to Mount Moriah and prepares to offer him as a sacrifice. At the last moment, God provides a ram “in the stead of his son.” This powerful event is far more than a historical account. It is a prophetic picture of Calvary.

The ram died so Isaac could live.

Jesus Christ died so we could live.

In this message, we examine one of the clearest Old Testament pictures of the gospel and see how every detail points directly to the Lord Jesus Christ.

Topics Covered:

• Abraham’s greatest test of faith

• Isaac as a picture of Christ

• The ram caught in the thicket

• Why the substitute had to shed blood

• “God will provide himself a lamb”

• The connection between Mount Moriah and Calvary

• The blood atonement of Jesus Christ

• Salvation through the Substitute

Key Scriptures:

Genesis 22:7-13

John 1:29

1 Corinthians 15:1-4

2 Corinthians 5:21

Romans 5:8-9

Colossians 1:14

Hebrews 9:22

1 Peter 3:18

Revelation 1:5

The gospel is not that Jesus merely suffered.

The gospel is not that Jesus merely set a good example.

The gospel is that Jesus Christ shed His blood, died for our sins, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the scriptures.

The ram died in the stead of Isaac.

Jesus Christ died in our stead.

“Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.”

John 1:29
