THINGS THAT WILL NOT SAVE YOU | Ephesians 2:8-9

There may be no more important question that a man can answer than this:

What are you trusting to save your soul?

Many people are trusting in things that sound religious, sincere, moral, and even biblical. Church attendance. Baptism. Turning from sinful behavior. Feeling sorry for sin. Confessing sins. Praying a prayer. Being a good person. Keeping the commandments. Doing good works. Religious experiences. Persevering to the end.

But none of those things can save your soul.

In this message, Dr. Robert Potthoff examines the dangerous substitutes that religion has placed alongside the finished work of Jesus Christ and asks one simple question: Are you trusting Jesus Christ alone, or are you trusting Christ plus something you have done?

EPHESIANS 2:8-9

8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

Salvation is not Christ plus baptism.

It is not Christ plus church membership.

It is not Christ plus turning from your sins.

It is not Christ plus keeping commandments.

It is not Christ plus good works.

It is not Christ plus religious rituals.

Jesus Christ saves.

The gospel is that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the scriptures. He shed His blood to pay for our sins, and God justifies the sinner who believes on Jesus Christ.

ROMANS 3:24-26

24 Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

Here is the question that every person must answer:

If everything you have ever done for God were taken away, would what Jesus Christ did for you still be enough to save your soul?

Do not trust your religion.

Do not trust your goodness.

Do not trust your baptism.

Do not trust your repentance from sinful behavior.

Do not trust your prayer.

Do not trust your church.

Do not trust yourself.

Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ.

Christ plus nothing.

His blood.

His death.

His burial.

His resurrection.

His finished work.

That is enough.
